  The most disappointing thing about Breakfast at Tiffany’s is that no one has breakfast at Tiffany’s. The second most disappointing thing is the inconclusiveness of the ending.              But after some retrospection, I realised that’s the point of the novel. Holly Golightly is a ‘wild thing’ who cannot be expected to stay in one place or be tracked after she decides to leave. This is shown by the way she never gives the narrator her address.              At first impression, I thought: ‘Oh god, it’s another one of these manic pixie dream girls’. However, the manic pixie dream girl is a character who exists to complement the story of some boring male. Holly, on the other hand, exists only for herself. She has no intention of living in a cage, being confined or being attached to anyone. ‘Holly said she couldn’t bear to see anything in a cage’ (1958/2000:52...

Stories We Tell gave insight as to how everyone’s truth is different, and how these truths affect people differently. First, I want to write the disclaimer that I’m talking about personal truths here, like in Diane’s story, which affect only those involved directly or indirectly. Harry, the biological father of the filmmaker Sarah, asks ‘Can you get at the truth?’ And answers it with ‘I think you can get very close to it, but you have to limit it to those who were involved in the events’. This quote illustrates how truth is malleable. Harry laments that Diane is no longer around to give her side of the story, which is a problem as she is one of the only two people involved in the events. This makes the truth even more limited, to only Harry’s view. Truth is subjective as it is affected by memory. You could even say the truth isn’t real.
